Knitters, Crocheters, and other Fiber Artists! 
You are invited to show your creativity!

As part of our “Fiber Arts & Science Festival,”  and in recognition of International Knit in Public Day and International Yarn Bombing Day, the Discovery Museum Science & Space Center invites you to participate in Sacramento’s first Yarn Bombing public installation and exhibit!

When: June 9 & 10, 2012

Where: Discovery Museum Science & Space Center (3615 Auburn Boulevard, Sacramento 95821)

How to participate:                       

  1. Adopt a tree, bench, post, fence, rock, or other objecton the Museum grounds for a suggested donation of $25 per object.
  2. Select your object in person at the Museum, online at www.thediscovery.org/events, or we can help you pick one over the phone or by email. (916.808.3942 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )
  3. You may participate as an individual or a group.
  4. You can select your object at any time, starting now!
  5. Create a yarn bombing/graffiti installation for your chosen object.
  6. Let us know the title of your creation and – if you choose one -- the name of your “knitta” persona or group name.
  7. Install your creation either on Friday, June 8, or before 10am on June 9.
  8. You are welcome to set up your lawn chairs and knit in public on the Museum grounds both days.
  9. The installations will remain on public view for 2 weekends. Artists may claim and remove installations  between 4:30-5pm on Sunday, June 17, or before 4:30 on Monday, June 18.

  11. Volunteer to crochet coral “creatures” in any color! To demonstrate how crochet is used to solve the mysteries of hyperbolic space, we will be creating a “crocheted coral reef.” Lion Brand yarn has free patterns for reef “creatures”:  go to lionbrand.com, and search for “coral reef” under free patterns, or http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/c-coralReef.html.
  12. Volunteer to teach crocheting.
  13. Crochet in public and teach Museum visitors your craft.
  14. Volunteer to assist with  Fiber Weekend activities, such as hand-felting, introducing fiber –bearing animals, viewing fibers under microscopes, and other fiber-related fun).
