School Missions
Grades 5-8
The Challenger Learning Center is more than a field trip. It is a learning experience that excites and inspires studetns in math, science, language arts, and technology. Using the wonder of space exploration and the power of simulation as educational tools, the Challenger simulated space mission launches studetns on an exciting voyage of discovery.
The entire Challenger experience, from pre-mission preparatory activities to a post-mission celebration, is interactive, interdisciplinary, and exhilarating. Students apply knowledge they acquire in the classroom to a spectacular real-life situation. They develop and expand their communication, decision-making, and problem solving skills. Teamwork is a key element necessary for a successful mission. Students return to the classroom filled with confidence and enthusiasm for learning.
Preparation for and participation in each of the three scenarios meet many state and national content standards. Mission scenarios are developed by the Challenger Center for Space Science Education.
Extensive knowledge of space and astronomy is not required to participate in this program.
The school program includes:
-
Half-day Progessional Development Workshop for one teacher (required for all new teachers)
-
Curriculum for up to 20 lessons for pre-mission preparation
-
One student simulated space mission
Each mission is 2.5 hours in length (9:00 AM - 11:30 Am or 12:15 PM - 2:45 PM) and needs from a minimum of 16 students to a maximum of 34 students. Each program costs $500.
