The Discovery Museum exhibits and programs offer many learning opportunities to support Scouting activities. There are exhibits, scheduled programs, and camps to help Scouts earn awards – and have fun doing it!
These current and on-going Discovery Museum programs can help your troop meet the requirements for many merit badges!
Planetarium Shows
Bring your Scouts to Sacramento's only public planetarium to learn about the universe
- Book a private show or join a regularly scheduled weekend presentation
- Ages four years old and up
Simulated Space Missions in the Challenger Learning Center
Participate in an exciting simulated space mission; apply science, math, technology, and language arts to inspire your Scouts to "reach for the stars."
- Book a private mission or join a regularly scheduled Community Mission
- Ages 10 years onld and up, minimum of 16 crew member (can be both adults and scouts) for private missions.
Digging Up The Past: Hands on Archaeology Dig
Souts are immersed in a hands-on interactive archaeologiclal project that integrates multidisciplinary skills in a real-life simulation. Learn how archaeologists really uncover the clues used to decipher the stories of the past.

- Ages nine years old and up, minimum of 16 team members (can be both adults and scouts)
Science Encounter! Self-guided Hands-on Laboratory Experiences
Explore the discovery Museum's current exhibition. Learn about forests and the animals that live in them during your tour of Got Trees? Continue your tour by learning about the first manned missions to the moon in our special exhibit Fly Me to the Moon! (Now through January 3, 2010)

Cub Scouts, Webelos, Boy Scouts
The Discovery Museum Science & Space Center offers a variety of educational, fun badge workshop experiences and exciting adventures. Our unique programs are specially designed to immerse scouts in dynamic activities while they complete badge requirements. All programs are conducted by the museum's own experienced and knowledgeable education staff members, and ttake place on the museum grounds.

Cub Scout Astronomy - Belt Loop & Academics Pin

9:30am to 11:30am
Blast off with the Discovery Museum Science & Space Center to explore the wonders of the universe. Complete both your Astronomy Belt Loop and Academics Pin with one exciting visit to the museum. Museum education staff will lead Cub Scouts through the three required Belt Loop exercises and then extend those introductory lessons to meet the requirements needed to earn the Academic Pin. A planetarium show will excite Cub Scouts as they learn to identify the North Star and constellations. Cub Scouts will diagram the solar system, learn about stars and identify other objects in the universe. Scouts will learn about early space missions and then will learn to use binoculars to explore the night sky on their own.

Fossils, rocks and minerals! CubScouts will dig in with the Discovery
Museum Science & Space Center to earn their Geology Belt Loop and Academics Pin in a single visit. Cub Scouts will participate in a hands-on
lab using high-quality materials and
large-sized rock samples to learn how
to identify the three kinds of rocks.
Cub Scouts will make a crystal garden
to learn more about the unique
properties of crystals. A chemical
volcano demonstration will highlight a
lesson on the three unique types of
volcanoes. Each Cub Scout will make
his own sample rock collection and
fossil cast in addition to creating his
own "pet rock."
