Girl Scout Programs 2013

 

Girl Scout Junior Day

Saturday, February 23

9:00am - 12:00pm

Junior Journey Jumpstart! Join your fellow Girl Scouts at the Museum for an Open House-style event.

Four activity stations jumpstart Juniors on the way to their Detective, Flower, Animal Habitat and Entertainment Technology Skill Builders.

Activities are ongoing continuously during the three-hour event.

No registration is required, but space is limited.

$10 per Junior (Does not include admission to Museum.)

Girls are encouraged to wear their uniforms and must be
accompanied by an adult.

Juniors completing all four activities will receive a Discovery Museum Scout Participation Patch.

Cub Scouts Academics: Astronomy

Feb. 18th, 9:30am —12:00pm

Space is the place to explore for the Astronomy belt loop and academic pin! During this fun activity, Cubs and Webelos will:

Visit the planetarium for a Star Show to learn about the planets, moons and other objects of our Solar System.

Learn to locate constellations and then follow the life cycle of a star.

Discuss how to safely observe the cosmos and use this knowledge in their own backyards.

$20 per Cub per program. (Fee does not include Museum admission.)

Cub Scout Academics: Weather

March 16th, 9:30am —12:00pm

Calling all Cubs and Webelos!  What do you know about the weather? Here’s a great opportunity for a hands-on learning experience.  During this action-packed morning, you:

Make your own weather station to take home and track weather conditions, and learn the correct use of weather terms.

Use prisms to explain rainbow formation and identify different types of clouds. Understand and discuss the greenhouse effect, hurricanes, and tornados.

Perform an experiment to see the effects of acid rain and make a poster to understand the water cycle.

$20 per Cub per program. (Fee does not include Museum admission.)

Boy Scout Archaeology Program

May 18, 9:00am —11:30am

Join the Discovery Museum’s resident archaeologist on a simulated archaeological excavation and laboratory experience! Ready to get dirty? Activities include:

Mythbusting!  What do archaeologists really study?

Learning skills! What does an archaeologist need to be successful in the field?

Hands-on experience! Scouts head out to the excavation site to uncover buried clues from the past, while rotating through four different jobs.

Lab research! Scouts return to the laboratory to research their discoveries and create a presentation of their conclusions about the excavation.

Boy Scouts should bring water and wear outdoor clothes!

$20 per Scout per program. (Fee does not include Museum admission.)

Boy Scout Robotics

April 13, 9:00am — 3:30pm

What is a robot, how does it work and how can you build one?

You answer these questions during Boy Scout Robotics day! Scouts get to be creative and work with technology, too. In this exciting Boy Scout Robotics program, boys:

Work in teams to learn how to build, program and operate a robot using LEGO Mindstorms©.

Use their knowledge to solve a complicated task.

Boys should bring their own snacks, lunch and water.

$50 per Scout. (Fee does not include Museum admission.)

Boy Scout Challenger Mission

April 20, 8:30am - 11:30am

Take a trip to the future... The year is 2061 and Comet Halley is scheduled to make its next appearance in Earth’s night sky. Let’s go out to space to meet it!

Boy Scouts are invited to experience the thrill of being an Astronaut and a Mission Controller on one of eight work teams as they "Rendezvous with Comet Halley”.

Team options include navigating the Space Station, communicating between Mission Control and Space Station, assembling the probe that is sent to Comet Halley and five other very exciting job opportunities!

Boys work in both Mission Control and the Space Station Lab.

$20 per Scout per program. (Fee does not include Museum admission.)
