Sacramento Powerhouse Science Center

Sacramento Science Discovery Weekends

Powerhouse Science Center

Future New World-Class Science Center Coming Soon!

altA destination. A world-class science center is coming soon to Sacramento! This gateway here at the current Discovery Museum website will be where the new brand, the new website, and the new vision for the Powerhouse Science Center will emerge.

altAfter more than 7 years in the making, thousands of people from the community have worked tirelessly toward making the new Powerhouse a reality.

They've planned, designed, funded, promoted, and volunteered to bring the next evolution of what has been our beloved Discovery Museum Science & Space Center for over 60 years to a whole new level, to the River District, which is the rapidly revitalizing American River and Bridge district communities currently under redevelopment.

You Can Make the Difference

Today efforts are under way to wrap up a last $2 million dollar capital-raising effort that helps vest individuals and families through the Founding Member program (the Periodic Table of Elements). You can help get the Powerhouse to breaking-ground status as a family or individual through the Founding Member Program.

The Vision

The Powerhouse Science Center will be the premier science & space learning center of Northern California. Watch the latest

Powerhouse Science Center VIMEO story from Dreyfuss & Blackford Architects.

altIt will serve as a model for 21st-century experiential education in science, math, technology, engineering, and space - and an exemplary "green" building that serves as an environmental teaching lab.

The new Powerhouse Science Center will be a convergence point, a tributary, a shining center of innovation, creativity, exploration, and practical application, of “Glocal” synergy (global and local) helping to shape our current and future Next Economy in our region.

Powerhouse, as the new science center is envisioned, will be both a catalyst and an epicenter of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning for people from all ages--from "cradle to grey."

The Site Plan

altPerched across from the bridge district of West Sacramento along the expanding Old Sacramento corridor, which itself sits adjacent to the legs of the new arena development district, the new Powerhouse is also a part of the re-imagined museum district and will be within walking distance of the reinvigorated shopping and cultural experience coming from the redevelopment efforts underway.

The Powerhouse Science Center will be a major architectural and educational experience destination, a gem in the new “core” vision of sports, entertainment, lifestyle, and culture that visionaries and public and private leaders are all working towards on both sides of the river. (Read Redefining the Core: Sacramento Business Journal, July 11, 2014).

The Promise

The Powerhouse Science Center will feature generous exhibit space for current and traveling exhibits as well as a newly expanded and updated Planetarium & Challenger Learning Center.  Movies, laser shows, and astronomy programs, a cafe with outdoor seating, and more will be part of the Powerhouse Science Center.

Remember that already “Powerhouse” STEM-connected programs are being delivered at the existing Discovery Museum. Here are just a few examples of what's happening today you and your family can experience--all a part of the new programming for the new Powerhouse!

§  Robotics Experiences: Creation of a fully equipped Robotics lab on site that serves as central base for a new education segment in robotics and engineering which includes: Competitive “Robots of the Future” teams, Out-Of-School Time and Outreach programs, and Intel’s “WeDo” Robotics & Young Women Initiative.

§  Dinner With A Scientist: Is a unique experience for 7th – 12th grade students that can inspire and motivate them to excel in disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) — and encourage them to pursue STEM careers.

§  Portal to the Public, Science Communications Fellows: Brings scientists and public audiences together in face-to-face interactions that promote appreciation and understanding of current scientific research and its application through fun, interactive, content-rich learning activities.

§  Outdoor Education Collaborative: Uniting with Sierra Nevada Journeys, and the Sacramento Valley Conservancy in offering Outdoor Science Education programs which include field programs, overnight science camp, teacher professional development and family events.

§  Challenger “Team-Building” Missions: Accelerating corporate training opportunities within our Challenger Learning Center. Participants are transformed into astronauts, scientists, engineers, and researchers working together in space exploration scenarios to develop skills of cooperation, communication, critical thinking, and problem solving as a team that “reaches for the stars.”

§  Power of Discovery – STEM2: Powerhouse is part of the California After School Network and California STEM Learning Network’s effort to mobilize a broad coalition of stakeholders who will work together to increase quality STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) learning opportunities in local Out-of-School Time (OST) programs.

Stay tuned for "groundbreaking" news, and thank you, Sacramento, for the years of support you have given, for helping to achieve this new vision, and for your tireless love of all things science!
